Market segment introduction and ON Semiconductor marketing position

Currently one of the most significant developments in car design is the shift to hybrid and fully electric vehicles. This consequently requires a fundamental change in the architecture of vehicles’ electrical systems: the introduction of 48V DC systems alongside the traditional 12V DC systems.

One of the key reasons for this shift is that 48V allows higher currents and greater power delivery. And this is urgently needed as modern cars consume much more electrical energy through energy-intensive climate-control, powerful driver-assistance computers, complex infotainment systems etc.

But even more importantly adding 48V systems brings greater fuel economy and reduced emissions at relatively low cost by enabling hybridization. By driving auxiliary functions such as power steering racks, brake vacuum pumps and water pumps with electric motors rather than using a power transmission from the engine, 48V systems help to run internal combustion engines more efficiently.

The introduction of 48V will come gradually, with the 48V infrastructure to run alongside the traditional 12V system. Shifting to 48V demands the development of a wide range of new componentry that can operate at this higher voltage and meet the ambitious new standards of the automotive industry.

Actually there is a fast development in power electronics ongoing to serve the opportunities created by the shift to 48V systems.

ON Semiconductor offers a wide range of 48V Mosfet solutions with a variety of break down voltages, technology, and package suitable for high-frequency switching or motor drive applications.

ON Semiconductor are a top 10 global semiconductor supplier to the automotive industry, with more than two decades of success delivering innovative, automotive grade semiconductor solutions. Whitepaper: “ON Semiconductor Automotive 48V Applications”

The automobile is one of the greatest inventions in human history. In general, it is a motorized wheeled vehicle capable of transporting a small group of passengers over long distances. It is typically driven by an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). Modern car design is based on a concept patented back in 1886, by a German inventor Karl Benz (Benz Patent-Motorwagen). Ever since the Ford Motors company launched its massproduced Model T back in 1908, the number of cars increases each year. Although vastly improved since its early days, the working principle of the ICE remains more or less the same: a four-stroke engine that runs on energy produced by combusting liquid fuel and oxygen mixture, generating CO2 gas as a by-product.

A Belt-Driven Starter Generator (BSG), is an electric motor with 48V operating voltage, however in addition it also acts as a generator. The BSG is coupled directly to the to the internal combustion engines crankshaft by means of a belt drive. When required power from the on-board 48V lithium-ion battery drives the BSG and the torque generated is added directly to the vehicles crankshaft boosting the engines torque. Conversely when the driver steps on the brake, the kinetic energy is recovered being converted into an electrical current and fed back into the 48V battery. This allows for up to 40% of the braking energy to be recovered and stored in the battery.

Modules

To enable higher level of integration and push at the limit the level of power density, ON Semiconductor is developing a full family of transfer molded modules specifically designed for BSG/ISG applications. Based on the APM17M module package, the integration of the best in class 80V/100V MOSFET technologies combined with the high thermal performances of the package, this family of modules addresses the most stringent requirements of thermal and power efficiency, low EMI, reliability and lowest cost of ownership. The module approach based on APM17M will reduce dramatically the design phase, improve overall system performances, simplify the assembly in production and ultimately reduce the time to market. The higher voltage in a 48V system brings a number of benefits when compared to a 12V system. In addition to enabling more powerful ancillary devices e.g. infotainment, heaters, pumps etc. Since the current draw is only 25 percent of that of a 12V system, engineers can reduce the cross sectional area of the wiring in the system and therefore reduce the weight and cost of the wiring harness.
