Our commitment to sustainability is ever-growing
At Avnet Silica, we recognise the importance of measuring and mitigating our environmental impact. As a large corporation supporting Europe's top technology companies, we have a responsibility and an opportunity to influence the future of our planet and society for the better. As we reflect on our long and proud history, we’re charting a decisive path forward and committing to building a sustainable future for our company and all our stakeholders.
The technology we help our partners create enables many possibilities that make the world smarter and safer, but for us, protecting our planet’s environment has to come first. Sustainability is a big part of the “what” we’re reaching for each and every day.
Because we operate in so many countries across Europe, it is of utmost importance that we carefully manage our carbon footprint and our impact on every community where we do business. That means holding ourselves – and our partners – to the highest standards. We encourage manufacturers to make environmental information available on their websites and to partner closely with suppliers to provide customers with all relevant information and declarations from related manufacturers.
A smaller footprint is our best foot forward
When we conducted a comprehensive environmental, social, and governance materiality assessment in 2020, our external stakeholders ranked climate change as one of the most important issues. In addition, waste emerged as a key topic in the electronics industry that’s important to our employees.
Using the results of our materiality assessment to inform our strategy, shape decision-making, and refine our disclosures, we’re making progress toward reducing Avnet’s environmental impacts. We monitor our energy and direct and indirect emissions at our major facilities with the long-term objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy efficiency throughout our operations.
This will eventually include impacts upstream in our supply chain and downstream to our customers. We are currently focused on improving our emissions data and setting more ambitious goals. We aim to conduct a comprehensive carbon, water, and waste footprint study and develop a strategy to increase renewables and reduce emissions, water, and waste.

Learn MoreEnergy Management
In homes across Europe, networks of Internet of Things devices mean energy use can be optimised in real-time, responding to changes in electricity prices and weather conditions. Meanwhile, renewable installations are integrated seamlessly and sustainably for clean electricity, making the most of natural resources when the sun shines and the wind blows.
Electric vehicles become more than just consumers of power — they store and share it, too. Bidirectional connections encourage the two-way flow of energy between utilities and end users, creating a more flexible, stable, and resilient grid.
Learn MoreSmart Agriculture
Agriculture is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Rising global food demand, pressure on natural resources, and the need to optimise water, fertiliser and energy use are driving farms toward more precise, connected and increasingly autonomous operations. Smart Agriculture solutions address these challenges by combining advanced connectivity, high-precision positioning and edge intelligence to create data-driven, efficient and resilient farming systems.
Power
With the ongoing shift to renewable energy and the electrification of transport and industry, the demand for higher power and greater energy efficiency in electronics is increasing. There are solar PVs requiring greater efficiency in energy conversion, data servers requiring more and more power, EVs and batteries requiring more storage, and chargers of all kinds needing more power, and faster!
The material properties of wide bandgap semiconductors bring many advantages, especially for power-critical applications.
Learn MoreSustainability through the Internet of Things
IoT (Internet of Things) can play a crucial role in supporting sustainability by harnessing the power of interconnected devices and real-time data. Through IoT technology, various industries can optimise their processes and practices to reduce their environmental impact and promote a more sustainable future.
In the realm of energy efficiency, IoT-enabled smart systems can monitor and control energy consumption in buildings, homes, and industries. By adjusting lighting, heating, and cooling based on occupancy and environmental conditions, energy wastage can be minimised, leading to reduced carbon emissions and lower energy bills. IoT also contributes to waste management, where smart bins and waste collection systems optimise collection routes, reducing fuel consumption and decreasing the amount of waste sent to landfills. This encourages recycling efforts and enhances overall waste management efficiency. To conserve water, IoT sensors provide real-time data on water use in agriculture, urban areas, and industrial processes. With this information, farmers and industries can optimise irrigation practices, reducing water wastage and promoting sustainable water usage. In agriculture, IoT devices provide insights into soil moisture levels, weather conditions, and crop health. Farmers can utilise this data to optimise irrigation, reduce the need for harmful pesticides, and improve overall agricultural productivity in an environmentally friendly manner.
We could give endless examples of the impact of IoT on sustainability, but why not tune into our We Talk IoT Podcast and learn more about the businesses making a genuine difference in sustainability with their solutions?
Episode 80: AI on Tap: How NXP is Revolutionising Water Quality for Everyone
Two billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Traditional pH monitoring relies on slow, manual lab testing – often too late to prevent contamination. In this episode, Fabrizio Librizzi, Senior Product Marketing Manager at NXP Semiconductors, explains how edge AI and analogue front-end technology are transforming water quality monitoring.
Episode 66: Diamonds are forever, PFAS not: How CiX Greentech purifies water
In this episode, we explore the future of water purification with Timo Fromm and Rudolf Borchardt from CiX Greentech, a German startup tackling one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. CiX has developed a smart, ready-to-use purification module that uses diamond electrodes and electricity to eliminate micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues, hormones, bacteria, viruses – and persistent chemicals like PFAS.
Episode 64: Powering the Shift: NXP’s Mark Swinburn on IoT and AI Driving the Future of Energy Management
Mark Swinburn from NXP joins us to explore the pivotal role of energy management in today's world. We discuss the challenges posed by rising energy demands, the critical importance of sustainability, and the impact of AI and digitalisation on energy systems. The conversation delves into how governments, companies, and investors can accelerate the clean energy transition through standardisation and partnerships.
Episode 37: Unleashing the Power of Wind Energy

Episode 34: How IoT Protects Forests and Combats Climate Change
Wildfires across the globe are worsening. They are growing larger, becoming more intense and frequent, and even creating their own weather – from Australia to North America, from the Arctic to Africa. According to a United Nations report, Climate change and land-use change are projected to make wildfires more frequent and intense, with a global increase of extreme fires of up to 14 percent by 2030, 30 percent by the end of 2050, and 50 percent by the end of the century.
Episode 32: Revving Up for a Greener Future: EV Charging and V2G Technology
As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and the need for efficient and reliable charging infrastructure is growing Vehicle-to-grid Technology offers a solution that not only meets the energy needs but also benefits the electrical grid and helps reduce carbon emissions.
Episode 31: Smart Water Meters - Revolutionising Water Conservation with Data and AI
Can you imagine cities like Shanghai or Melbourne running out of water within the next 20 years? It's a frightening thought, but with an average household consuming almost 130 litres of water per person, we must cut our usage by half to keep the water flowing for all.
Sustainable Sourcing: Nurturing the Global Supply Chain
Supply chains are responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), supply chain emissions are estimated to be more than 5.5 times higher than a company's direct emissions, on average.
It's incredibly important for companies to periodically review and improve their supply chains where possible. Hundreds of businesses across EMEA have used Avnet Silica's MYSUPPLY service to build a more resilient and sustainable supply chain, which in turn can improve profits.
Avnet's CEO, Phil Gallagher explains how digitized supply chains can help cut waste and CO2 emissions.
