Automotive: The Design Engineer's Guide

Automotive comfort, infotainment and safety

In automotive design, comfort and infotainment refers to features that make the ride easier and more enjoyable. Encompassing everything from music and speakers to SatNav, touch screen and in car videos, the technology is advancing at a rapid pace, with car manufacturers finding more and newer ways to enhance the experience of travelling in a car.

Balancing these aspects with core safety functions has become an important part of the process. With more distractions possible from inside the vehicle, manual-drive cars need to be able to alert drivers to risks, and notify them of any issues. Safety features in autonomous cars must go even further – with radar and lidar systems forming the backbone of a car's ability to take a passenger safely from A to B.

Furthermore, safety systems need to integrate with a vehicle's infotainment systems. This puts more emphasis on electronic component selection than ever before, and passive devices and interconnects are key to smooth operation of these systems.

Designing in-vehicle infotainment systems

In-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems make up a highly sophisticated part of modern car design, keeping drivers and passengers informed and entertained on the road.

Here we explore the architecture, applications and requirements for IVI, how to tackle the key design challenges, and the considerations for passive components and connectivity.

LIDAR systems

LIDAR technology is essential autonomous vehicles. Sometimes referred to as 'laser radar', it's a time-of-flight system that detect objects and calculates distances.

Here we explain how LIDAR systems work, the types of systems currently in use, and how to approach passive and connectivity selection for these key safety systems.

Radar systems

Radar is often used in conjunction with other systems including LIDAR, vision sensors and ultrasonics in order to maximise vehicle safety.

Here we explain how radar systems are employed in various vehicle applications, and discuss the differences between the various technologies.
