European power efficiency guidelines

There are several agencies publishing efficiency guidelines and limits. Most of these guidelines and regulations are very similar however, only the regulations published by the European Commission, the EcoDesign Directive, is mandatory. The others have the same intention, saving energy, but are voluntary and are a way for power supply manufacturers to differentiate their ‘greener’ design from their competitors.

EcoDesign Directive

The EcoDesign Directive provides guidelines which stipulate compulsory design requirements for certain types of domestic and industrial products. In general these requirements focus on standby & no-load power consumption as well as average operating efficiency. If products which are part of a defined product group do not comply with these requirements they will not qualify for CE-marking, and therefore cannot be sold in the European Union.

International Efficiency Mark

The international efficiency marking protocol provides a system for power supply manufacturers to designate the minimum efficiency performance of an external power supply, so that finished product manufacturers and government representatives can easily determine a unit’s efficiency. A grading system shows minimum active and no-load efficiency levels.

ENERGY STAR Label

ENERGY STAR is a joint program from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. This voluntary labelling program is designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The ENERGY STAR label is now used on most major appliances.
