Are you trying to find the right encoder for your application but you are not sure which solution fits the best? Kickstart your motor control project with the onsemi SmartENC ev-kit!
Mounting the latest NCS32100 inductive position sensor IC, this evaluation kit is an unmissable opportunity to get familiar with induction-based resolvers to track rotor position, without all the drawbacks of optical and Hall effect technologies, as it offers:
- No loss of absolute position after power off (only when backup battery is used);
- No need for manual recalibration;
- No loss of precision due to the presence of strong EMI and dirt.
How it works
Inductive sensing, as the name suggests, is based on mutual induction, hence the capability to impose (or “induce”) a voltage in a secondary coil by applying to it a magnetic field, related to a varying AC current flowing inside the primary coil.
The values of the inducted voltages in the secondary conductor are dependent on the number of turns, or coils, and on the distance of the two coils with respect to each other.
In the onsemi NCS32100 inductive sensor, the magnetic field is generated via a primary coil on the PCB, using an AC excitation source in the chip. The magnetic field couples with the rotor, which then induces voltages in the stator coils. Based on the voltages measured, the chip can derive the position of the rotor with high accuracy.
What is provided
Thanks to its minimal, all-in-one design and intuitive GUI software, the product guarantees an incomparable plug-and-play approach, allowing testing right away out of the box.
The physical system provided comprehensive of:
- A rotor PCB, mechanically coupled to the shaft through ball bearings;
- A stator PCB, hosting the NCS32100,excitation coil and sensing coils;
- A stator PCB, hosting the STM master controller and the USB interface for power supply and communication to the PC;
- Aluminum frame with NEMA23 mounting holes for easy industrial installation.
The coupling of the shaft with ball bearings allows to reach speeds up to 10000 RPM while an auxiliary supply could be integrated using the backup battery.
On the NCS PCB, a 2.5MHz UART sends the encoder signal to the STM controller, which acquires, decodes and communicates, via USB cable to the PC, the data to be displayed on the GUI.
The software
The GUI software, exclusively developed by N-and Embedded for Avnet Silica, is fully compatible with Windows 10 and 11 and features a clean, simple and interactive dashboard.
Through it, it is possible to:
- Track the angular position in real time
- Track the number of turns from reference position;
- Plot of raw position;
- Plot of speed in rpm.
Moreover, it offers a calibration functionality and the possibility to read/edit the register of the NCS32100 sensor.
