Power conversion systems
Given the enormous energy consumption in today's world and government policies to minimize carbon emissions, the shift to renewable energy presents a greater challenge than ever to reliably provide energy where and when it is needed. As a result, the demand for energy storage systems is also increasing. A critical component of any successful energy storage system is the power conversion system (PCS). The PCS is the intermediate link between the storage element, usually large batteries (DC), and the power grid (AC).
The AC/DC and DC/AC conversion takes place in the Power Conversion System (PCS). The energy flows into the batteries to charge them or is converted to AC by the battery storage and fed into the grid. For PCS, solutions below 30 kW are generally best served with discrete solutions such as OptiMOS™, CoolMOS™ and CoolSiC™ MOSFETs, while above 100 kW the modular approach with CoolSiC™ and IGBTs modules and highly integrated 3-level Easy modules is most economical.
The range in between is best explored on a case-by-case basis to determine the use of discrete or modular solutions. Since every switch needs a driver and every driver needs to be controlled, we offer the appropriate EiceDRIVER™ gate driver ICs as well as XMC™ and current sensor solutions.
Infineon's unique expertise in power generation, transmission, conversion and battery management makes us the ideal partner to drive Energy Storage Solutions (ESS) in terms of efficiency, innovation, performance and optimal cost.
