Panasonic Bluetooth Modules

Panasonic Bluetooth® modules

Bluetooth® is a networking standard designed to meet IEEE 802.15.1 and administered by the Bluetooth® Special Interest Group (BT SIG). Conceived as a 2.4GHz wireless standard to replace wired headsets, Bluetooth® has grown in both scope and capability. By far it is the most prolific wireless standard today adding over 1,000,000 nodes to the network every day, in cell phones, PC’s, consumer and medical electronics applications and many more. With short project deadlines, a module design enables the engineers to be the first to take the final product to the market.

Panasonic offers the following Bluetooth® modules:

  • Bluetooth BR/EDR
  • Bluetooth Dual Mode
  • Bluetooth Low Energy

Bluetooth® BR/EDR

Bluetooth® BR/EDR technology is best suited to high data rate applications (up to 3 Mbits), where the network size is under eight nodes. This is a piconet of one 1 master device and up to 7 slaves. Role switching is supported. Larger networks can be formed with Scatternets. Connections are robust, even in noisy environments, by using 79 channels, each 1 MHz wide, adaptive frequency hopping, and multiple modulation schemes. Range can be adjusted using hardware and software from under a meter to over two hundred meters. There are several types of profiles which describe a variety of use cases. For example, SPP or Serial Port Profile is a standard profile for wirelessly connecting devices in place of a serial cable.

Panasonic BR/EDR Bluetooth modules
Features Applications
  • RF channel: 79 with 1 MHz spacing
  • Topology: Piconet (1 master, 7 slaves), larger nerworks via Scatternets
  • Connection time: 1,000 ms
  • Modulation: GSFK
  • Encryption: Safer+
  • Battery life: Months
  • Max. data rate up to 2,100 kBs (net)
  • Range: 1-200m (typ.)
  • Consumer electronics
  • Mobile phone accessories
  • Industrial applications
  • Cable replacement

Bluetooth® Dual Mode

Bluetooth® Dual Mode  technology offer Classic Bluetooth® technology and Bluetooth® Smart Ready technology in one device. These modules combine both communication stacks and permit a shared antenna. They can communicate with other devices implementing both technologies as well as devices implementing either technology and therefore can easily be added to ‘hub’ devices, e.g. for industrial, automation, medical and fitness products.

Bluetooth® Low Energy

Bluetooth® low energy technology fits the bill perfectly for wireless communication devices that have been optimized for low power consumption. It consumes as little as one-hundredth the average power required by Classic Bluetooth® technology.

Bluetooth® Smart technology achieves its low power consumption primarily by keeping its radio turned off most of the time. It scans only three advertising channels, and its radio awakens only to send or receive short bursts of data.

At second generation Bluetooth® Smart ICs, so called “nanopower” Bluetooth, transmission power consumption will fall by about 66 per cent with no loss of range or performance.
