Driven by the need for improved vehicle range, charging time, safety, lifetime and sustainable transportation, innovation in electric powertrains is focused around on-board chargers (OBC), DC/DC converters, traction inverters as well as the battery management system (BMS).

400V power supplies will soon to be the new standard, and 800V power supplies are already being offered in series-produced vehicles. The doubled voltage means that considerably more power can be transmitted in the same amount of time at the same current, resulting in significantly shorter charging times. However, traditional semiconductor components are now reaching their physical limits.

Join the experts from Avnet Silica and our leading supplier partners, Microchip, Navitas, onsemi, Qorvo (United SiC) Renesas, and STMicroelectronics to learn about the most appropriate, innovative, and cost-effective technologies that will be driving the design of tomorrow’s electric powertrain.

How to optimize the switching efficiency in On-Board Chargers and DC/DC Converters (Michael Luett, STMicroelectronics)

On-Board Chargers, DC/DC Converters and traction inverters are high power applications in electric vehicles (EV), with power levels in the Kilowatt and even up to the Megawatt range. To optimize the range of an EV, the electric power from the HV battery stack has to be used with highest possible efficiency.

This session will focus on the OBC and DC/DC and introduce the most common application topologies with their pros and cons. Furthermore, an overview of ST’s latest power semiconductor solutions will be given, that are enabling the highest possible switching efficiency in the new Automotive applications.

The implementation of GaN in high power EV and new energy (Solar/Storage) systems yields significant cost / size / weight benefits (Alessandro Squeri, Navitas)

The implementation of GaN in high power EV and new energy (Solar/Storage) systems yields significant cost / size / weight benefits, but it comes with several design challenges. GaNFast(TM) architecture overcomes the component-level challenges allowing GaN to be utilized for higher efficiency and higher power density. In addition to electrical design optimization, advanced packaging with improved thermal performance further increases.
