A key component in any electric (EV) or plug-in hybrid (HEV) vehicle is the high-voltage battery (up to 800V) and its associated charging system. The On-Board charger (OBC) recharges the battery from the AC mains at home or from charging stations.

From a 3.6 kW single-phase to a 22 kW three-phase high-power converter, today's (OBCs) On-Board chargers must provide the highest possible efficiency to ensure rapid charging times as well as meet the limited space and weight requirements.

ST has a wide offer of discrete semiconductors including AEC-Q101 qualified IGBTs, silicon and silicon-carbide (SiC) MOSFETs and diodes, AEC-Q100 qualified galvanically isolated gate drivers for IGBTs and MOSFETs and SPC5 32-bit Automotive microcontrollers to enable scalable, cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions for On-Board chargers.

Featured product: STPower SiC MOSFETs and 600V MOSFETs

The silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET is based on ST’s advanced and innovative 2nd generation SiC MOSFET technology. This device features a remarkably low on-resistance and very good switching performance. The variation of switching losses is almost independent of the junction temperature. The device is recommended for the PFC stage of an OBC.

The high-voltage N-channel Power MOSFET is part of the MDmesh™ DM6 fast recovery diode series. Compared with the previous MDmesh generation, DM6 combines very low recovery charge (Qrr), recovery time (trr) and excellent improvement in RDS(on) with one of the most effective switching behaviors available in the market for the most demanding high-efficiency bridge topologies and ZVS phase-shift converters. This device is recommended for the DC/DC stage of an OBC.
