STMicroelectronics A6986F

Automotive 38 V, 500 mA synchronous step-down switching regulator with 30 µA quiescent current

STMicroelectronics A6986F - front view

The A6986F automotive grade device is a step-down monolithic switching regulator able to deliver up to 1.5 A DC. The output voltage adjustability ranges from 0.85 V to VIN. The 100% duty cycle capability and the wide input voltage range meet the cold crank and load dump specifications for automotive systems. The “Low Consumption Mode” (LCM) is designed for applications active during car parking, so it maximizes the efficiency at light-load with controlled output voltage ripple. The “Low Noise Mode” (LNM) makes the switching frequency constant and minimizes the output voltage ripple overload current range, meeting the low noise application specification like car audio. The output voltage supervisor manages the reset phase for any digital load (μC, FPGA). The RST open collector output can also implement output voltage sequencing during the power-up phase. The synchronous rectification, designed for high efficiency at medium - heavy load, and the high switching frequency capability make the size of the application compact. Pulse by pulse current sensing on both power elements implements an effective constant current protection.

STSW-eDSim - fast and powerful electrical simulation software for SMPS and analog ICs

eDSim is a fast and powerful electrical simulation tool for SMPS and analog ICs, integrated in the eDesignSuite tool. It features enhanced accuracy and higher convergence speed for SMPS, enabling a simulation time 10-50x faster than the classical analog SPICE simulators.

The tool is a specific version of the SIMPLIS/SIMetrix simulation environment paired with ST model components, for a full electrical simulation with no limitation of nodes and circuit size.

Design your analog circuit using the eDesignSuite engine, display a preview of it in few seconds with full annotated schematic and BOM, and then run the electrical simulation through eDSim to get fast and accurate simulations and reliable design validation, thus reducing the effort and risks related to hardware prototyping.

With the eDSim tool you can also create your schematic from scratch using ST models or simulate your SMPS and analog ICs from a list of predefined ST application schematics - test benches, that you can partially modify according to your needs.

Software release 2024.12 is now available.

STEVAL-ISA188V1 - 38 V, 1.5 A synchronous step-down switching regulator evaluation board based on A6986F3V3

The STEVAL-ISA188V1 is a product evaluation board based on the ST synchronous step-down switching regulator A6986F3V3, which can deliver up to 1.5 A and, with its 100% duty cycle ability to withstand cold crank events and wide input operating voltage range, represents the ideal choice for battery-powered automotive systems. Synchronous rectification helps achieve higher efficiency at full load as well as application compactness, while high-frequency switching (programmable up to 2 MHz) helps reduce the cost and size of power passive components while remaining outside the AM band. The device can operate in low consumption mode (LCM), with a quiescent current of 30 μA that ensures high efficiency under light load, which is a requirement in typical car body applications that are active when a car is parked. A low noise mode (LNM) can be selected to meet the requirements of infotainment applications with forced PWM mode under all load conditions. The default board configuration is LCM active, 500 kHz switching frequency, high ISKIP current and the switchover feature enabled, but all of these settings can be easily changed so the user can evaluate different application scenarios.

STEVAL-ISA190V1 - 38 V, 1.5 A synchronous step-down switching regulator evaluation board based on A6986F

The STEVAL-ISA190V1 is a product evaluation board based on ST's synchronous step-down switching regulator A6986F.

The device is capable of delivering up to 1.5 A and its 100% duty cycle capability to withstand the cold crank event along with its wide input operating voltage range make A6986F the ideal choice for battery powered automotive systems.

Synchronous rectification improves efficiency at full load as well as application compactness, while high-frequency switching (programmable up to 2 MHz) lowers power passive costs and size while remaining outside of the AM band.

The device can operate in low consumption mode (LCM) with quiescent current as low as 30 µA at VIN = 12 V and VOUT = 3.3 V, hence assuring high efficiency at light loads, as required in typical car body applications that remain active while the car is parked. A low noise mode (LNM) can alternatively be selected to meet the forced PWM mode requirement under all loading conditions for infotainment applications.
