Increase the robustness and reliability of PoE systems

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that delivers both power and data over a standard Ethernet cable. Devices such as Wi-Fi Access Points, IP Security cameras and IP Phones that utilize PoE are referred to as Powered Devices (PDs). PoE Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) are devices that deliver power to these PoE-enabled PDs. PoE PSEs include PoE switches, PoE midspans/injectors and wireless routers. The key benefit of PoE is the elimination of the external power supply and flexibility in device placement.

The PoE Team at Microchip has been developing PoE solutions for over 25 years. Over time, they have contributed to the IEEE Ethernet standards for PoE and developed several IEEE 802.3af/at/bt-compliant PoE ICs and systems. Building on the success of their previous solutions, they are now introducing their seventh-generation PSE chipset with enhanced power management and surge protection features to reliably power PoE switches, PoE midspans/injectors and wireless routers.

The PoE Legacy

Microchip The PoE Legacy

Microchip is a pioneer and market leader in PoE technology, having introduced the first Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) IC and Powered Device (PD) IC onto Ethernet infrastructure. Microchip identified the need for power in switches and created the first PoE midspan/injector to deliver both data and power.

Microchip also introduced outdoor and multi-Gigabit PoE midspans and has significantly contributed to the IEEE 802.3af/at/bt standards. They continue to innovate, focusing on supporting new applications requiring higher power and greater speed, for both indoor and outdoor uses. Microchip advancements aim to reduce operating expenses and facilitate faster deployment.

Robust and Reliable PoE Solutions for Network Infrastructure

Microchip is a leading innovator in PoE technology, uniquely supplying PoE Powered Device (PD) ICs, Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) ICs, PoE systems, and test equipment.

Microchip PSE ICs integrate into various networking devices to efficiently power networks. For non-PoE equipment, Microchip offers midspans and specialty switches that deliver power and data over Ethernet cables without changing the existing infrastructure. Microchip provides a range of PoE midspans and switches with different power levels, port numbers, and data rates for various environments. Microchip's certified PoE systems enable easy deployment even in challenging settings, maximizing infrastructure investment.

Microchip PoE Solutions for Network Infrastructure

Gen 7 PoE PSE ICs Powering Switches, Routers, Gateways and Midspans

Building on previous successes, Microchip introduced their seventh-generation PSE chipset with improved power management and surge protection for PoE switches, midspans/injectors, and wireless routers.

The PD77020 PoE PSE Controller and PD77728 PoE PSE Manager offer an IEEE 802.3bt-compliant solution, supporting 4 to 48 ports with 90W per port.
