Broadcom: Galvanic Isolation for Intrinsic Safety Applications

Online, On Demand

Live presentation date: September 29, 2021

Overview

Whenever there is a need to operate electrical equipment in an explosive environment, extreme caution needs to be taken to limit the risk of an unwanted ignition. Equipment developers need to comply with standards governing intrinsic safety and the requirements for operation in intrinsically safe environments.

Many industrial companies working in mining, drilling, fluid flowing, gas and vapor processing, as well as powder and dust-type production facilities, have to operate equipment in an explosive atmosphere. The international standard IEC 60079, or ATEX in Europe, regulates the equipment used in such environments.

This webinar will introduce the meaning of intrinsic safety as defined in the IEC 60079-11 standard, highlight the key requirements in intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe environments and explain the usage of galvanic isolation and power limitation as the basis for protection within equipment and interconnects. In addition, we will take a closer look at the usage of Broadcom optocouplers in intrinsic safety applications and how these devices comply with the latest version of the IEC-60079-11 standard.
