Live presentation date: October 5, 2022
Overview
The pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique is widely used in insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) inverters. The high switching speed of theIGBT leads to high dv/dt in the inverter and results in a lot of negative side effects to the motor drive. These side effects degrade and reduce the lifetime of the motor. Broadcom's new slew rate control smart gate driver provides a simple and cost-effective way to reduce the high dv/dt, improve the lifetime and performance of the motor.
In motor drives, easy control and high efficiency are some of the many benefits of variable speed or frequency drives (VSD/VFD). However, the operation of these pulse-width modulation (PWM) driven motors causes a number of negative effects in the equipment, such as. damage to the motor’s insulation and bearings due to the excessive dv/dt voltage. Signal errors in equipment can arise due to strong EMI generated by PWM driven motors. These negative effects degrade the lifetime and performance of the motor.
Existing solutions use expensive and bulky dv/dt filters which lead to efficiency losses. In this webinar, we will introduce the new slew rate control smart gate drive, ACFJ-3405, to control the dv/dt of the IGBT dynamically. ACFJ-3405 has 2 levels of slew rate control which change the strength of its output current, driving the gate of the IGBT. Depending on the motor current loading condition, the dv/dt and switching loss will be optimized by ACFJ-3405, as it controls its output driving strength dynamically. This simple and cost-effective method of controlling the IGBT slew rate will help to improve the lifetime and performance of the motor.
