Matter: The bridge connecting different products, protocols, and ecoystems

As the number of smart home devices increases, the interoperability between the different products, ecosystems and protocols gets more complicated. Matter specification solves this dilemma and has been created for device makers to follow for many smart home applications. Infineon Technologies, CSA, along with 280+ companies, are pioneering this game-changing Matter standard to make ease-of-use, interoperability, security and sustainability a reality in the smart home.

Discover how Infineon’s Matter-enabled solutions help accelerate the creation of innovative, sustainable smart home products.

Infineon offers Matter-enabled products and solutions that comply with the new IoT standard. With over 20+ years of proven experience, these solutions are reliable, easy to implement, secure and integrated regardless of the connectivity protocols.

What consumers can expect of the new Matter standard

  • Strong security > Proven, pervasive and robust security for privacy and data
  • Universal interoperability > All Matter-enabled products across ecosystems work together and can be controlled with the preferred system
  • Easier consumer experience > All devices are compatible and can easily be integrated, controlled and monitored
  • Reliable connectivity > Enables low-power products in the smart home
  • Reduced costs > Device makers create less device variants for different ecosystems, while manufacturing these devices becomes simpler and more cost-effective
  • Intuitive sensing > Enables accurate and reliable sensing for smart devices

Reasons to build with Matter include:

  • Lower latency and higher reliability than cloud-to-cloud connection, because Matter is an IP-based local connectivity protocol.
  • Lower development costs: build once and it works for all Matter-certified ecosystems.
  • Consistent setup experience across all Matter-enabled devices.
  • Device sharing and control via other Matter-compatible ecosystems.
  • Wide variety of supported devices with different hardware platforms (Wi-Fi-Thread-Ethernet) being interoperable.

The Matter standard: Implementing improved security and connectivity for the smart home

The smart home continues to evolve in available functions and complexity as several different connectivity protocols from numerous suppliers target a variety of products for use in smart homes. However, many consumers (71% according to incontrol) acknowledge fear of their personal information being stolen while using smart home products. At the same time, ease of use for user-installed products has often been elusive.

Working collectively, many leading suppliers and potential suppliers have taken the next step to provide improved interoperability to smart home products using the Internet Protocol (IP). Called Matter standard, the key to the success of these efforts is security. This white paper addresses the need for universal Smart Home standards with integral security, explains how Matter addresses both and identifies Infineon’s role in making both connectivity and security for smart homes a reality.
