With people spending a considerable amount of time in vehicles each week, having an in-cabin environment that is enjoyable to be situated in is paramount. Automobile manufacturers fully recognise this as a differentiator, with a great deal of engineering effort being invested into it.

The breadth of infotainment equipment being included in vehicle designs is now staggering - all calling for advanced multimedia technology. In addition to their operation, providing an effective means of control is important. Over the last 15 years, there has been a shift away from using buttons, switches and dials, with these being replaced by touch displays. As these can still, however, present a distraction for drivers, there is increasing interest in HMIs that require less attention and do not call for drivers to take their eyes off the road. ToF will allow simple gesture recognition to be conducted, so the sound system's volume can be adjusted, a different radio station picked, or a phone call initiated - all without the driver’s attention needing to be averted.

Part of the TSN family of protocols (actually preceding them, in fact) is audio video bridging (AVB). This is being widely incorporated into vehicle infotainment systems where Ethernet communication is in use, so as to provide the necessary synchronisation to audio and video streams. Since Ethernet does not normally support deterministic operation, ABV is needed to ensure that the different multimedia endpoints are kept in time with one another. Take the speakers in a vehicle’s sound system as an example; without the determinism that ABV provides to the Ethernet infrastructure, the output from different speakers would be out of synch - leading to poorer audio quality being experienced.

Bluetooth pairing means that that a car can access information from a user’s smartphone, so that personal preferences can be applied, such as seat positioning, ambient lighting, or musical taste. This will be of particular value as we move into an era of autonomous vehicles being a pooled resource, with people ordering one to pick them up as required.

Greater infotainment capabilities, along with increased use of sensors for autonomous driving, AI-based processing and new in-vehicle networking architectures will lead to cars soon needing to store TBytes worth of data. This will mandate inclusion of high integrity DDR3 and DDR4 memory resources.

Magnetic sensors are pivotal in enhancing vehicle comfort levels. They provide occupants with the ability to adjust seating, as well as supporting the operation of climate control systems, contributing to the stabilisation systems used to ensure a smooth ride and being an integral part of window and sunroof opening/closing mechanisms.

Through EBV, automotive manufacturers and systems integrators can source microprocessors, memories, communication ICs, ToF sensors, microphones, and magnetic sensors. This will give them the components needed to make their designs more comfortable and ensure that the driving experience is satisfying. Here are some of the key products we offer for this:

Power Distribution In Electric Vehicles

There can’t actually be no doubt about it anymore that electric vehicles will replace classical automobiles one day completely. At least many experts are absolutely convinced of it, and so heavy research and development is underway on that field.
