Mini- or Micro LED Technology
Mini LED is a backlight technology for LCDs that uses thousands of tiny LEDs to enable precise dimming, resulting in improved picture quality, higher contrast, greater brightness, and deeper blacks.
In theory, each LED can be controlled individually, but due to complexity, LEDs are grouped into zones that can be controlled independently—a technique known as local dimming. Beyond standard algorithms for zone control, combining them with AI-supported control can further enhance image quality (e.g., more detail in dark and bright regions, keeping faces well-lit while maintaining deep blacks) and improve energy efficiency by intelligently dimming unused zones.
Micro LED is a display technology that uses microscopic LEDs to create an image, with each LED acting as a self-emissive pixel. Unlike conventional LCDs, it does not require liquid crystals or a backlight.
This technology offers high brightness, high contrast, fast response times, and low power consumption, but production costs remain high.
