Infineon's solutions for EV Thermal management

The future of mobility will be dominated by electric vehicles (EVs) in order to ensure a net-zero economy.

However, in contrary to ICE vehicles, the e-motors in EVs produce little (waste) heat which is a challenge for EVs at low temperature. It means that additional heating is required to warm the passenger compartment and this comes at the cost of reduced available range since it increases the efforts for the battery management.

Therefore, thermal management systems play a critical role in EVs. The thermal management system is responsible to keep the electric motor, the power electronics and the battery at right temperature while ensuring the passenger comfort in the cabin. An efficient and sophisticated thermal management system is required since it has an immediate impact on the range, performance, and lifetime of EVs as well as on the passenger well-being in the cabin.

The entire thermal management system comprises various thermal circuits:

  1. refrigerant circuit for the cabin/ HVAC system,
  2. battery cooling & heating system
  3. inverter/ e-motor thermal system
  4. heat pump system

Infineon provides the key components in order to build the best cost-and-system-optimized smart actuator designs. The market for smart actuators is moving strongly towards small, mechatronic BLDC motor drive solutions and within that context, Infineon`s portfolio of MOTIX™ Embedded Power System-on-Chip motor drivers, Automotive MOSFET and Sensor portfolio is the right choice and state-of-the-art market integrated solution. Alternatively, if you require a solution for BLDC motor control applications which offer more computing power, AUTOSAR and embedded security functions (HSM, dual flash bank for OTA), we offer the TRAVEO™ II CYT2B6/ CYT2B7 microcontrollers with MOTIX™ BLDC Motor System IC TLE9563-3QX as a U-chip solution.

Reference designs

The reference design is an automotive 3-phase motor drive for engine cooling fan application using MOSFETs with a gatecharge > 100nC presents the current capability via the first worldwide integrated bridge driver capable to drive 1kW motors at 12V. The main components used in the reference are:

  • MOTIX™ TLE9879QXW40: This device is a part of MOTIX™ Embedded Power IC family and it is a single chip 3-phase motor driver, System-on-Chip (SoC) solution. It integrates an industry standard Arm® Cortex®-M3 core along with LIN transceiver, bridge driver and power supply, enabling the implementation of advanced motor control algorithms such as sensorless field-oriented control (FOC).
Alternatively, the product TLE9877QXA40 can be used.
  • IAUA250N04S6N007: This is an OptiMOS™-6 40 V MOSFET in high-power leadless sTOLL package, providing higher current capability in smaller form factor of 7x8 mm² without sacrificing thermal performance. In combination with OptiMOS™-6 40 V power MOS technology, sTOLL offers best in class power density and power efficiency at Infineon’s well known quality level for robust automotive packages.

The reference design is optimized in terms of EMC and thermal behaviour. Moreover, it includes comprehensive support material including layout and schematic files (Altium), EMC tests, thermal analysis and detailed documentation.

The REF_WATERPUMP100W is a reference design developed for 3-phase automotive auxiliary water pumps in the thermal management system. It features:

  • MOTIX™ TLE9879QXW40: This device is a part of MOTIX™ Embedded Power IC family and it is a single chip 3-phase motor driver, System-on-Chip (SoC) solution. It integrates an industry standard Arm® Cortex®-M3 core along with LIN transceiver, bridge driver and power supply, enabling the implementation of advanced motor control algorithms such as sensorless field-oriented control (FOC).
Alternatively, the product TLE9877QXA40 can be used.
  • IAUC60N04S6N031H: This is a 40 V MOSFET in 5x6 SSO8 package, using Infineon´s leading OptiMOS™-6 technology. It offers cost efficiency for low and mid power drive applications. Moreover, it provides sizably reduced PCB size due to enhanced routing for bridge applications.

  • IPZ40N04S5-3R1: This component is an OptiMOS™ 5 40 V in S3O8 Package and it combines leading power MOSFET technology with 3.3 x 3.3 mm leadless power package for very compact and robust automotive system solutions. It is based on Infineon’s latest silicon automotive PowerMOS technology, optimized to meet and exceed the energy efficiency and power density requirements of automotive BLDC and H-bridge applications. In combination with Infineon’s robust S3O8 leadless package technology, it enables very small and efficient system designs with minimal RDS(on) down to 2.8 mΩ.

The reference design is optimized in terms of EMC and thermal behaviour. Moreover, it includes comprehensive support material including layout and schematic files (Altium), EMC tests, thermal analysis and detailed documentation.
