Converting a barrel power connector to USB-C is simple and straightforward using the EZ-PD™ BCR chip.
The EZ-PD™ BCR solution integrates all required components to provide a USB-C power consumer system-on-chip:
- The chip includes the complete USB-C interface, and the USB Power Delivery policy manager runs autonomously without needing any firmware development.
- The highly integrated solution contains several analog components on-chip including a 30V-tolerant LDO, PMOS gate driver and VBus discharge FET. The chip uses the 5V-20V VBus directly as power supply, eliminating the need for an external voltage regulator.
- The USB-C connector is well protected by the EZ-PD™ BCR solution with its on-chip OVP, UVP, OCP, VBus-short protection and IEC61000-4-2 compliant ESD protection.
- The EZ-PD™ BCR chip is in a 4mm by 4mm QFN package and it supports -40°C to 105°C, meeting the operating range a vast majority of consumer and industrial applications.

Move to USB-C by using EZ-PD™ BCR
The EZ-PD™ BCR family offers solutions that cover a good range of features, from simple legacy charger detection to full USB-PD implementation with the support for Programmable Power Supply.
- CYPD3178 supports USB Type-C only, up to 15 watts, in addition to legacy charging.
- CYPD3177 supports USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery up to 100 watts.
- CYPD3176 is the superset that supports USB Type-C, USB-PD and legacy charging. In addition, it supports Programmable Power Supply and sink overcurrent protection, and it can be reconfigured using EZ-PD™ Configuration Utility to customize features.
Each member of the EZ-PD™ BCR family comes with its own evaluation kit.

Fast prototyping with CY4533 kit
The CY4533 kit is available for customer evaluation and it can be used to quickly prototype a USB-C power consumer in a matter of few minutes. The kit has a USB-C receptacle for plugging in a USB-C charger or adapter. A rotary switch is provided for voltage level selection. All common USB-PD levels – 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, and 20V – are provided. Once the USB-C charger is connected, the CYPD3177 senses the rotary switch setting and negotiates the desirable voltage and current with the charger. A USB Power Delivery contract gets established. The CYPD3177 then turns on the power FET and the agreed-upon voltage and current are applied to the DC terminal.

Fast prototyping with CY4534 EZ-PD™ BCR-Plus and CY4535 EZ-PD™ BCR-Lite kits
Both work exactly like the CY4533 EZ-PD™ BCR kit, which is based on the CYPD3177, with a few additional features:
- Legacy charging detection for selecting different charging modes
- A debug header
- A USB-I 2C controller is added to facilitate Host Programming Interface usage through USB
This allows the designer to use the EZ-PD™ BCR Host Programming Interface Utility by plugging in the kit directly to a PC via a USB port.
The EZ-PD™ BCR-Plus and BCR-Lite kits are for CYPD3176 and CYPD3178, respectively.

Software control via external MCU
To enable software control by an external MCU, the EZ-PD™ BCR chip supports Host Programming Interface (HPI) over I2C. HPI overwrites the board-level hardware configuration and gives the MCU total control of the EZ-PD™ BCR chip via the software, including:
- Reporting of USB-C connection, plug orientation, and USB PD port status
- Setting and resetting USB PD power contracts
- Sending and receiving USB PD vendor defined messages
- Identification of connected power sources, reporting real-time VBus voltage levels
- Detection and reporting of overvoltage, command/response time-outs, and other error conditions
