Choosing NAND flash memory in factory automation systems

In harsh industrial environments, KIOXIA's non-volatile memory ensures data integrity and protection, providing easy maintenance, reliability and longevity. 

Looking at today’s modern factory automation systems, NAND flash memory is mainly used in some major application areas. This is on one hand on control level like industrial Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)  and on the other hand in actuators such as robots, cobots and AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicle). Cobot applications contrast with traditional industrial robot applications in which robots are isolated from human contact.

NAND flash memory for: 

  1. Storage of firmware, software and embedded operating system (OS): This allows for easy updates, maintenance of the device and ensures that it operates correctly.
  2. Storing system configuration data such as system settings, sensor calibration data, historical data, and other important information.
  3. NAND flash provides fast access times, which is crucial for real-time data retrieval and display on industrial HMIs. Its durability makes it suitable for industrial environments where shock, vibration, and severe temperature extremes are expected.
  4. Moreover Industrial HMIs,  PLCs, robots, cobots and AGVs often need to log data from sensors, switches, and other input devices as diagnostic information. NAND flash memory provides a reliable and non-volatile storage medium for this data. Sensor data such as images, video, and other sensor readings used to analyze the environment and make decisions based on the data are stored here as well, same as log data which allow to diagnose problems and improve system performance.
  5. NAND flash incorporates error correction mechanisms to ensure data integrity as well as storage for encryption keys and other security-related data to protect sensitive information on the application (HMI, PLC, robot, cobot, AGV) from unauthorized access or tampering. It can be configured in redundant setups to ensure data redundancy and fault tolerance in critical applications.

KIOXIA offers a broad line-up of UFS (Universal Flash Storage) from 128GB to 1TB and e-MMC from 4GB to 128GB covering temperature range up to -40°C to 105°C. These high-efficient and high-performance storage solutions provide a controller, error correction code (ECC) and other control functions in a single package.
