Power Integrations TinySwitch-5
TinySwitch™-5 unleashes up to 175 W output & 92% efficiency in classic flyback architecture
With 6 billion units shipped and counting, Power Integrations’ iconic TinySwitch product family has been the go-to switcher IC for power supply designs. Using basic diode rectification and optocoupler feedback, the family has set the standard for design simplicity and reliability for more than 20 years. Now, the new TinySwitch-5 devices offer increased maximum output power—175 W offline and 190 W with power factor correction - while achieving up to 92% full-load efficiency, all without changing the schematic.
TinySwitch-5 ICs feature an advanced control engine, which seamlessly adjusts switching frequency and energy per cycle to optimize efficiency, even at light loads - with up to 87% efficiency at 1% load. This allows power supplies to provide up to 220 mW output in standby, while meeting the needs of appliance manufacturers subject to the European Union ErP-mandated 300 mW standby power consumption limit.
TinySwitch ICs were the first to feature Power Integrations’ award-winning EcoSmart™ technology, which has saved an estimated 200 terawatt-hours of electricity since 1998 by slashing wasted standby power. TinySwitch-5 carries on the legacy by realizing high efficiency across the load range and dramatically increasing the available power, while maintaining design simplicity for bias and auxiliary supplies in appliance, computing, communications, industrial, and medical applications.
Product description
TinySwitch-5 is the latest generation in Power Integrations’ TinySwitch family of offline flyback power converters. A TinySwitch-5 device uses a sophisticated control mechanism that responds dynamically to feedback from the optocoupler, allowing it to optimize switching behavior based on load conditions. This innovation enables designers to maintain their existing circuit architecture while benefiting from significantly improved performance.
The controller in TinySwitch-5 adjusts the switching frequency and current limit in real time. At higher loads, the feedback current decreases, prompting the controller to shorten the time between switching cycles. This increases the switching frequency and raises the current limit per cycle, allowing more energy to be transferred to the output in a given time. The result is exceptional full-load efficiency - up to 92% - which is particularly valuable in applications where power density and thermal performance are critical.
At light loads, the controller behaves differently. As the feedback current increases, the time between switching cycles is extended, reducing both the switching frequency and the current limit. This dual reduction minimizes energy loss and achieves up to 87% efficiency - even at just 1% load. The efficiency curve remains remarkably flat across the entire load range. TinySwitch-5 ICs include robust protection features such as input under-voltage and over-voltage protection, output short-circuit and over-current protection, and thermal shutdown.
