With the latest generation of its flagship InnoSwitch flyback switcher IC family, Power Integrations has achieved a new level of integration. The innovative InnoSwitch5-Pro digitally programmable switcher ICs provide a single-chip approach to achieving zero-voltage switching (ZVS), without the costly addition of a high-voltage switch.

The new devices combine a robust 750 V or 900 V PowiGaN primary switch with the controllability of an I²C interface and the loss reduction of ZVS, resulting in higher than 95% efficiency without heatsinks and reducing the component count and PCB area required for ultra-compact adapters up to 220 W. Applications include notebooks, home gateways, USB power strips, in-wall USB receptacles, high-end cellphones and other consumer products.

Product Description

The InnoSwitch5-Pro family of ICs substantially reduces the size of power adapters by combining a high switching frequency of up to 140 kHz with a high level of integration. This combination significantly lowers both the component volume and the PCB area required for typical adapter implementations.
InnoSwitch5-Pro ICs employ advanced SR FET control to ZVS in discontinuous conduction mode, enhancing overall system efficiency to exceed 95%. This efficiency allows designers to eliminate the use of heat sinks, spreaders, and potting materials for thermal management, thereby further reducing size, component costs, and manufacturing complexity.

The use of ZVS and GaN technology transforms power supply design, virtually eliminating switching losses and capitalizing on the low conduction losses of GaN. This enables the implementation of extremely compact adapter layouts with significantly fewer components compared to asymmetric half-bridge (AHB) circuits or active clamp alternatives. Additionally, the integration of a PowiGaN primary switch and controller, isolated feedback, and a secondary controller with an I²C interface simplifies the development and manufacturing of fully programmable, highly efficient power supplies.
With the European Union adopting USB-C as the common charging standard and China promoting the new Universal Fast Charging Specification (UFCS), design engineers require versatile power conversion devices to develop ultra-compact adapters. The sophisticated control functions available through the I²C communication bus, which supports fine adjustments of output voltage and current in increments of 10 mV and 30 mA respectively, facilitate compliance with the strict accuracy and tolerance demands of all major fast-charging protocols.
