New LLC switcher chipset achieves >98% efficiency, delivers up to 1650 W of continuous output power
Power Integrations' energy-saving HiperLCS-2 chipset dramatically streamlines the design and manufacture of LLC resonant half-bridge power converters. The dual-chip solution features an isolation device (HiperLCS2-SR) with a high-bandwidth LLC controller, synchronous rectification driver and FluxLink™ isolated safety-rated communication link which drives a separate half-bridge power device (HiperLCS2-HB) utilizing Power Integrations’ unique 600 V FREDFETs with lossless current sensing and high- and low-side drivers.
New additions to the HiperLCS2-HB family offer a twofold increase in power output. Featuring advanced half-bridge switch technology and an innovative, thermally-efficient package, the new devices can deliver up to 1650 W of continuous output power with over 98% efficiency, targeting industrial power supplies as well as chargers for e-scooters and outdoor power tools. The family’s high efficiency and high level of integration reduce enclosure volume and eliminate the need for air vents and fans, enhancing reliability and resistance to dust and moisture.

Product Description
Resonant converters are typically used where an application demands the highest possible efficiency. However, resonant converters using separate controllers and discrete MOSFETs require a high component count, making them bulky and notoriously difficult to manufacture due to their complexity. The HiperLCS-2 chipset avoids the challenges normally associated with LLC designs, permitting designers to quickly and consistently create power supplies with high efficiency, wide operating range and low component count.
The primary-side HiperLCS2-HB device in the chipset incorporates 600 V FREDFETs in a half-bridge configuration. Self-bias and start-up control enable operation without an external bias supply. The new POWeDIP package includes an electrically isolating, thermally conductive ceramic pad that can be easily attached to any flat heat-sinking surface and provides a thermal impedance of less than 1°C per watt. The POWeDIP package provides extended creepage between the thermal pad and the IC pins to meet safety requirements.
The companion IC in the chipset, the HiperLCS2-SR, incorporates a secondary-side master controller that provides optimized synchronous rectification (SR) to reduce output rectification losses. It also includes a FluxLink isolator for robust, high-speed communication to the primary-side IC, eliminating the need for an unreliable optocoupler.
Power supply designs based on the HiperLCS-2 devices can achieve no-load input power of less than 65 mW at 400 VDC input and provide a continuously regulated output, easily complying with the world's most stringent no-load and standby efficiency regulations. All HiperLCS-2 family members feature self-powered start-up while also driving a PFC stage centered around the company’s HiperPFS ICs. Secondary-side sensing provides better than 1% regulation accuracy across line, load, temperature and across production variation.
